It's not often, really more like never, that I get Burgundy anywhere near this good at a price this good from a producer I adore. This purchase was possible due to a quirk in the inventory somewhere between the cellar and the US importer, still not sure exactly what happened but I'll take it! Always nice to be able to drink high level villages wine with a little bottle age for less than current Bourgogne rouge pricing from lesser producers.
The Domaine Joseph Voillot Volnay V.V. is the flagship wine from this great domaine and an elegant example of silky, red fruit and mineral Volnay in its purest form. Voillot is a traditional producer along the lines of Lafarge with great old vines in the best sites in the commune. The Volnay VV comes from a total of less than 2 hectares of sustainably farmed 50+ year old vines across Volnay and made the same way as the big premiers crus with 10-20%new oak depending on the vintage and bottled unfined and lightly filtered if necessary. The 2011 is a real Burgundy drinkers vintage and this is a great example. Red and black fruits, spice and mineral on the nose with a bit of damp earth. Spice and red fruit flavors with excellent transparency and focus. Plenty of energy on the palate with a complex layered finish. This will age nicely but drinking beautifully now. Very limited quantities.
