Gachot-Monot Côte de Nuits Villages 2019

The Gachot-Monot domaine is run by fifth generation Damien Gachot and his Danish wife, Lise. Together they farm about 30 acres of vines mainly in Corgoloin and Comblanchien, two appellations you’ll never see on a label but instead classified as Côte de Nuits-Villages.  This otherwise fairly obscure domaine was brought to the attention of importer Kermit Lynch via Aubert de Villaine (DRC) years ago and they’ve been part of the portfolio since the 2000 vintage. Farming is meticulous here. Damien is known to work his blue-collar Côte de Nuits Villages parcels as if they were grand cru vineyards and indeed they’re more reminiscent of good Nuits-St-Georges than anything else. And still able to offer these wines at less than half the price of many inferior wines from much more prestigious appellations just up the road from here.

The 2019 Burgundy vintage is turning out to be one of the best in decades, one where wines at this level really shine. Classic notes of mint, ripe red and black fruits and damp earth on the nose. Dense, dark fruit flavors on the palate and a long,, detailed mineral finish. Excellent precision and density in a wine which delivers much more elegance than its price point might indicate.  Yields were down 40% at Gachot-Monnot due to frost and there's never much of this available anyway, will go quickly. Just 24 bottles available.
