One of my favorite and best selling white wines is from a region I otherwise have almost nothing to do with though my favorite Bordeaux are universally white like this one, not red. Owner/winemaker Hervé Dubourdieu inherited Graville-Lacoste from his father who planted the vineyards in 1951. He also owns top rank Sauternes Château Roumieu-Lacoste which comes from his mother's side. The Graville-Lacoste property is across the road from the first growth Sauternes house, Château Climens, and shares that great terroir which is calcareous clay and lots of gravel, the pebbly soil that gives the Graves appellation its name.
Besides the decadent sweet Sauternes this region is home to, this is also the source of some of the world's great dry white wines. In fact, Château Haut Brion, arguably the greatest red Bordeaux, now trades at half the price of their magnificent white wine. At $900 a bottle I won be offering that one anytime soon.
The Graville-Lacoste vineyards are planted in a cool micro-climate within the Graves AOC and the wine is made up of 75% Semillon and the rest mainly Sauvignon Blanc. The classic cepage but the only wine I can think of from Graves that uses that much Semillon. It's also fermented and aged entirely in stainless steel - not the norm around in these parts - which really helps preserve freshness and minerality. The 2021 is just gorgeous with notes of seashell, kiwi and grapefruit, full bodied on the palate with a clean mineral finish. A perfect shellfish wine as well as a perfect apéritif. Just an all round incredible value. Good supply for the moment.
