Silvio Giamello Langhe Nebbiolo "Villa Gentiana" 2021

Silvio Giamello doesn't just produce one of the best values Barbaresco's I've ever had, he also bottles what one of the best Nebbiolo values in the Langhe. Farming just 2 hectares of 50 year old Nebbiolo vines in Ovello, one of Barbaresco's  top crus, Silvio makes this wine from vines planted towards the bottom of his parcel where it's a bit cooler in order to focus what he considers the best fruit into his flagship Barbaresco bottling. This is Barbaresco DOCG in all but name and from one of the zone's best vineyards to boot.

The Langhe Nebbiolo Villa Gentiana is named after the Roman consul Genziano who lived on this very property back in the day. The name became Licenziano in local dialect which is what Silvio calls the estate. Made in much the same way as the Barbaresco, the main differences are the shorter fermentation/maceration and much shorter aging periods. 10 days as opposed to 20 fermentation, 10 months in 3,000 liter barrels where the Barbaresco sees between 2 and three years. It's also a much more approachable young Nebbiolo.

All the dried red fruit, truffle, tobacco and rose petals of great Nebbiolo with just enough acidity  and mineral notes to highlight deep fruit flavors. Stunning little Nebbiolo that would certainly benefit from a bit of bottle age but so good right now. One shipment a year, 36 bottles available.
