Rovellotti Nebbiolo Colline Novaresi Valplazza 2018

The Rovellotti family have making wine in Ghemme, the jewel of the Alto Piemonte for over 600 years, or forever as they describe it. One of the oldest families in the region and still at it with their boutique production of some of the best wines in the region. Famous for their top Ghemme bottlings which makes up the bulk of their small production, this little Nebbiolo may be the most impressive wine in the cellar based on value alone.

The Rovellottis farm about 15 hectares in the southernmost sector of Ghemme called Barragiola which has always been the most prized land in this micro region. References to Barragiola as a source of great wine go back to the 1600s and it's no less true today. While the majority of the land produces Nebbiolo and Vespolina for Ghemme, Just one hectare in a parcel called Valplazza is planted to 100% Nebbiolo and that's what goes into this wine.

This is pure Nebbiolo aged in stainless steel and bottle for a total of about a year before release which helps to preserve Nebbiolo's lovely, vibrant fruit qualities. Fresh cut flowers and crushed red fruit on the nose with ripe  cherry and raspberry along with earthy mineral on the palate. Moderately tannic, dry and bright but not searing acidity. A rather sophisticated example of young, approachable Nebbiolo and a steal at this price. Tiny production, very little exported.
