Edmond Cornu Bourgogne Rouge Les Barrigards 2019

The Edmond Cornu & Fils domaine in Ladoix-Serrigny, founded in the mid nineteenth century, now run by son (fils) Pierre, is a blue chip Burgundy house by any standard. You dont see the Ladoix-Serrigny name on many bottles, mainly because of the really confusing AOC regulations which let one label these wines a number of different ways. Ladoix is the first commune you encounter on the way down from the Côte de Nuits and indeed, the wines are more Nuits than Beaune in style. Where Savigny-les-Beaune, for instance, displays a bit more of a feminine, silky Pinot character, these are darker, subtly more powerful red Burgundy, usually requiring at least a few years of cellaring before approaching.

This wine comes from a single parcel of 40 year old vines in Ladoix near the neighboring Chorey-les-Beaune AOC, in general a source of some of the most underappreciated wines in the Côte d'Or.  Like so many red Burgundies I've been tasting from the excellent 2019 vintage, this is no wallflower. There's muscle here but much more finesse than a typical "big" Burgundy vintage. rich red and black fruit on the nose and palate with warm spice, violet and mineral. Well structured and finishes long. Never much imported, 28 bottles available.
